Cell by Gerhard Richter (1988) – Poster

A single concrete cell fills the frame, its surface a dense mosaic of color and texture. This is Cell, a 1988 work by Gerhard Richter that turns industrial geometry into abstract poetry. Ochre, cobalt, and crimson bleed into one another across the cell’s facade, their edges softened by Richter’s signature blur. The strokes are deliberate yet restless, layering oil paint into a surface that feels both solid and in motion, as if the structure might dissolve into pure chroma. Richter, long fascinated by the tension between photography and painting, here treats a utilitarian form as a canvas for emotional depth. The cell becomes a microcosm of memory and erasure, its identity both revealed and obscured by the artist’s hand. It’s a meditation on how the familiar can become strange, and how the rigid can yield to the fluid. Bring Gerhard Richter’s Cell into your space as a fine art print or poster. This wall art speaks to collectors who value subtlety and those who seek richness in the everyday.
